There are over two million electric cars registered in the UK, and around 1.3million of these are battery electric vehicles or BEVs.

While the network of EV chargers is still expanding, there’s potential for new approaches.

More BEVs on the roads

The number of BEVs in the UK is expected to rise by at least a third next year. The total could reach 1.66million, accounting for one in 20 cars on the road

The UK is reportedly on track to have 100,000 public EV charging points by August 2025. The government also has a plan to make smart charging at home the norm to save time, money and energy.

Better access to EV charging

Public EV charging still needs improvement to offer better access for all drivers. Up to one in 20 UK users of the public charging network don’t have off-street parking to charge at home.

Public charging can cost much more than using an off-peak home energy tariff. Now a new project could allow people to use through-pavement charging. EV drivers that park on the street close to their property could then apply for a dedicated EV home charging channel. The option is already available from 26 local authorities.

Guidance for local authorities on safe cross pavement solutions as promised in the ‘Plan for Drivers’ is also urgently needed. This will help to support further innovations in EV charging.
