Microgeneration installations reached a record level in the UK in January 2025.
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) says January 2025 was a record-breaking month for renewable energy solutions.
With over 23,000 installations, that’s a 25% increase compared to January 2024.

The most popular options were new battery storage and heat pump installations. 2,600 battery storage installations represent a 176% increase compared to last year. Thousands of certified battery storage installers support this increase across the country. There was also an increase of over 20% for home heat pump installations, bringing the total to almost 281,000.

The figures are based on the MCS dashboard which provides an almost real-time national picture of small-scale renewable technology use. Every day it tracks the uptake of schemes and installations, adding the information to the annual and monthly results. It can show the technology used and installation types and keeps local authorities up to date by location.

What is the MCS?

Founded in 2007, the MCS was set up to make sure the UK could meet increasing demand for renewable sources of domestic energy. Since then, nearly 1.2 million homes have installed renewable energy technology.

As we move towards the government’s net zero carbon emissions target for 2050, reducing domestic energy use is important. The MCS certifies products and installations to maintain quality for the UK’s homes and communities. It creates and maintains standards for products, installers and their installations.

In January this year updates to the MCS changed much of the documentation and certification requirements. These changes were designed to strengthen the commitment to consumer protection. The technical standards and requirements for performance estimates and pre-sale information haven’t changed, although simplification makes them easier to apply.

Businesses can use renewable energy microgeneration systems to reduce energy bills and sell excess energy to the National Grid.

Microgeneration can help you promote your business’s approach to sustainability, which is increasingly important for customers. It can help reduce taxes such as the Climate Change Levy, for example, which is based on your KWh of energy use. There’s also a range of funding schemes available to help you install renewable energy technology. This funding is mostly available under the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
